Hi, June, I am Pat in Fl. and have a PMU mare from ND. She arrived here in Feb. of 2004 and has been right here ever since. She is now 13 and to me looks like a foundation 1/4 horse. I enjoy riding her--when it is cool enough--she has always been spooky on the ground, but not under saddle on the trail. The old hussy is hard to catch if you want to ride, but if I am sitting in the yard reading, she is all over me--sniffing and nudging. Go figure!! I am having a hard time getting used to this new board, but look forward to meeting more people. Pat in Fl

Hi My name is Lynda and I too am a new owner of PMU horses. I bought a mare and in foal and a two year old appy. I lost the mare to collic but the foal a filly is doing fine. I look forward to a lot of fun training and breaking these two sweeties. I am looking at buying another mare and foal but haven't made that decision up yet. I am older as well and have loved horses all of my life. I am excited to work with the filly. I want to teach her dressage. Of course this could be a case of the blind leading the blind. The appy is being trained for cattle and pleasure. I am going to be using the John Lyons method of training so we will see if this works. It is nice to meet all of you.

Hi, Pat & June, I am Ingrid in CA and I also recently adoped a PMU mare from ND. She arrived end of July, 2005. Registered QH King Ranch foundation stock, 7 years old. This mare is also a little spooky and hard to catch, but getting better at being handled. Must be something in that SD air that makes them spooky & hard to catch. Ingrid in CA

Hi June and all,
It is good to see people starting to show up here. My wife and I adopted our PMU mare Whisper from Doug's original bunch. She was a wonderful horse but died tragically of an outbreak of Listeriosis.

The vets had no idea what killed her and others, so we started a group to figure it out and eventually proved it was Listeriosis. Anyhow, she is now famous for the name "Whisper Syndrome" that we gave the disease while trying to figure out what it was.

Dear All: After reading all the various posted messages, I am reminded of a story I once heard:
"A man was walking along the beach at low tide and there on the sand were hundreds of stranded Starfish. The man then saw a young boy walking along, picking up Starfish one by one and tossing each back in the ocean. The man said to the boy: How can you possibly save all the Starfish when so many are stranded & dying and what difference does it make? The boy picked up another Starfish, tossed it back in the ocean, and replied: 'It made a difference to that one'".

The point being, we do make a difference with each horse saved, one by one!

Hi Linda
Welcome to the group. We got two PMU Belgian mares in Jan 2004, Thelma and Louise. Thelma had a still born, got Azoturia the following day, and died a month later from renal problems. Louise is retired in foster care. Since them we have started a rescue and have our non profit status with the IRS. We are located in Silver City, NM. If you are interested in another PMU mare and foal, we have a beautiful pair. Brianna is a Morgan/Percheron and her son Johnathan is a strong, long legged doll. You can email me privately at serenityacres@hotmail.com for more info and pics. We just came back with week from the Magnolia TX auction where we got 7 horses and a jenny - 3 mares, 2 w/ foals, and 2 geldings. They were all covered with fungus, one mare has a deep hole in her neck that we are irrigating 3x a day and givine antibiotics.
One baby has a gash in her head and a swollen leg, a 25 y/o mare w/ baby is covered with sores from where a stallion attacked her. Another mare and the 2 geldings are in pretty good shape. We have them quarentined for 30 days and in rehab. Apparently they came from a ranch where the man had died and his kids didn't want the horses. We were biddiing against the killer buyer. We couldn't get all 17 horses, but we got a bunch! We were told that the PMU foal auction will be there on Oct 15. we plan to be there.

Just checked in to say hello to all--I like the starfish story very much--as I am not a spring chicken by any means if I ever get another horse--have the Baxter 11 now--it will be an older horse. I don't want my precious ones to wind up in an auction and don't really trust anyone to have the money or the will to take care of them. Pat in Fl.

Hi,
I'm Katie, from the wine country of Northern California. I'm a mom to four kids and wife to one patient guy!
We have a Percheron-Paint PMU gelding, 4 years old, that I adopted as a yearling. Half Pint is starting his career as a dressage horse.
We also have several other elderly rescue horses, plus my daughter's Pony Club MULE!
In May, we became foster parents to three neat former PMU mares, all Appaloosas. You can read about our adventures with "Essie, Grace & Vicka" at http://www.horsehomepages.com/watermarkfarm

How is everyone coming along with their PMUs?? I see on the news, most of the country is having bad weather--here in N.Fl. it is cool and --as usual--damp. I am not very computer literate and find thid board hard for me to get on, but I am interested in how everyone is doing. Pat in Fl.
