Does anyone have a recommendation for books on foaling? "Blessed Are the Brood Mares" provides useful information, but encourages birth in a stall. My mare will enter a stall, but being a PMU, I believe she is more comfortable in the open. We set up an area about 60x40 that is partially covered and grassy for the mare. A few days after the birth we will turn the mare and the foal out to pasture.

If anyone has experience with PMU maiden mares, I would be interested in their advice on foaling.

I would be interested in this as well. Most of the books and information on the internet is geared towards "normal" situations.

One of our PMU mares is having her first foal, so a stall is not a big deal, but the other mare is older and I have been worried about the stall. Growing up, we never stalled our horses when they foaled. They were put in a smaller pasture and things usually went well for them. When there was a problem, the pasture setting had nothing to do with it.

However, we started stalling the older mare in a large stall at night and she seems to have no problem with it. The area you have setup seems fine to me. It is plenty big enough.
