Ok I am a big girl that is one reason why I want/need a draft horse. I have come to realise that the chances of me loosing the wieght are very slim (no pun intended). I have allways been fat and will allways be fat sooo for those who have PMU draft/draft crosses do you think they would be able to hold my weight. I only want to do some trail riding and pleasure riding. please you honest opinions please and what breed do you think would be best.

Hi Misty,
Lots of heavy people ride and ride well. Just as with a tiny rider, having a secure, balanced seat is most important!
General rule of thumb is that horses can carry up to 20% of their weight. That means that a 1,000 pound horse might carry up to 200 lbs comfortably. So, a 1600 lb Draft horse might carry 320 pounds.
My friend's husband is a large man, and he chose a 2,000 lb Belgian gelding for his trail horse. This horse EASILY carries his 300 pound body.
My 1,200 lb Thoroughbred mare spent part of her early retirement years doing dressage with an obese lady. This lady weighed approximately 240 pounds and was only 5 feet tall, but she was a very skilled, balanced rider who kept my mare conditioned and strong. I had no concern about her weight on my mare as she was such a soft, balanced rider. She also made sure saddle fit was good, etc.
If I were you, I'd look for a well trained draft or draft cross or a big quarter horse, etc with a fairly short back---stay away from long-backed horses if you are heavy.
So....in answer to your question, yes, a fat rider can do just great on a bigger, more stout horse. Just make sure you take all these factors of rider skill, saddle fit, horse fitness into consideration.
Good luck!
Katie
