We just adopted two PMU horses. A 8 yr old Belgian mare and 1.5 yr old Cldye/Perch filly.

The filly is big girl and more used to people then the mare. The horses are in a small pasture with two goats, a sheep, chickens and our pot bellied pig. There has not been a problem with anyone but the filly and the pig. The filly either doesn't like the pig or perhaps is afraid of her. The filly is now running at Petunia (pig) and appears to be trying to hurt her. The pig has done nothing to cause this problem. She tries to stay out of her way, the filly sees her an goes after her. Petunia is solid black, older and of course can't outrun a huge horse. Right not we don't have anywhere to seperate them. Also the filly is now pushing away the older mare and taking her food. She will take anyone's food. I don't think she is mean, just young, strong and assertive. How do you teach a horse to stop bad behaviour? The food I can handle, but what can I do to stop her from attacking Petunia? Any advice, please help>

Thereallalong,

I don't know that I can give you any advice as to how to handle this situation. However, I will tell you what I have heard about pigs and horses. The owner of the stables I board my horses at had a adult pig stomped to death by two Belgians. I was sharing this story with a co-worker and she stated that pig are carnivores therefore, horse view them as predators. This could be why your filly is attacking her. If at all possible I would suggest separating them if at all possible.

I tried to do some research, but didn't find too much on the topic. Growing up, we never put pigs in with horses, but I would agree with Nikki...should remove the pig before it gets hurt.
