Here's an idea for your evac kit. When you get a new yellow pages delivered, before you throw out the old one tear out the pages that contain headings; ANIMAL, PET, and VETERINERIAN. Most all the info should still be current, and if you have to find a boarding kennel, pet store, or alternate vet after you get out, you have the listings with you. Makes things a bit easier.

Also, I saw an ad for a ready made evac kit you can buy that comes packed in a five gallon bucket with a lid. That's a great idea for storing your kit! It's mostly water, bug, and mouse proof, and it has a handle for easy grab and go! Buckets and sometimes the lids can be purchased an most home supply stores, so you can put together your own kit. I had been using them for storing cat food, but it never occured to me to use one for my evac kit.

Here's another idea for your evac pack. If you have a dog, include one of those dog tie-out stakes shaped like a giant corkscrew, and a tie-out cable. If there's no fenced area for your dog to run, they can still get some exercise in your Mom's unfenced yard or that grassy patch next to the motel parkinglot. The stake I have fits diagonally in the 5 gallon bucket.
