Do all your local fire departments have PET oxygen masks?
If not, a good disaster preparedness project would be to organize a fundraiser and buy them some now. You can get a set of 3 masks -- with the smallest fitting birds, reptiles and guinea pigs and the largest fitting large dogs like St. Bernards -- for ONLY $55! On the ASPCA website, under their Shelter Outreach link, there is an article about the Wisconsin Humane Society. WHS just purchased enough masks for all of their their 84 firehouses. I contacted WHS and asked them for more info. I was told that purchases are done through HELP Animals Inc which gets the masks from SurgiVet. The HELP Animals website is http://www.helpanimalsinc.org. "How we distribute masks" link: http://www.helpanimalsinc.org/howweoperate.php Not only do you help your firefighters and the animals in your neighborhood, you also get to use the fundraising event to promote general emergency preparedness. NOTE: Check with your firehouses BEFORE organizing this event to make sure there are no local restrictions on what they can carry in their trucks. |

In the Washington metro area there is also the Chico Project. Two of our customers run this local non-profit to raise money and purchase oxygen masks for fire trucks.
Their website is http://www.pet-projects.org/ Pennye Jones-Napier The Big Bad Woof |

Thats a very good idea. also many fire depts. also
lack training in pet recusitation and or pet CPR It is advisable that fire dept. take pet cpr training in addition to human cpr if possible. as an instructor in PET CPR , I train many local fire depts. and other organizations free of charge. |
