What are the best methods for keeping animals, birds and people cool during hot weather evacuations, emergencies and/or rescues?
I was told that horses overheat easily and someone has to stay in the trailer with them wiping sweat off them? Is that true? What about birds? Is a water bottle that you squirt on them enough to keep them cool if you get stuck on the highway in 90 degree heat or your own home loses power and you have no AC? Are there mini-fans people should be buying (good only until the batteries run out), solar powered options? I found something called Cool Ties and Cool Mats that people can sew up (by hand or machine) and keep with their emergency gear. The pattern below (there are lots out there) uses non-toxic polymer granules from Watersorb. Buy them online or at places like Lowes. http://watersorb.com/polymer_cool_neck_bands.htm Here is a pattern for headbands and pet cool down mats using nontoxic Water Gel Crystals. http://watergelcrystals.com/Headbands.htm#Pillows Note: Both polymer crystals are non-toxic, but Cool Beds should not be used by pets who are chewers. If eaten, the crystals could swell inside the animal and cause harm. That said, Cool Beds are used by lots of pets and sold in a variety of forms online. Also, crystals don’t last forever. The info I found gives them a 1-2 year lifespan after initial activation. |

I'm new to this but what I use for my dog is by Soothsoft.com the canine cooler..if you can keep it in the shade not direct sun..i use mine of course in my house. When the directions say dont fill it(water)in front of the pet..believe it..but I can say I swear by it for my dog. You can just lay it down and the animal will find it and enjoy it. Dont force the dog to it, let them find it. You could possibly adjust to a emergency situation/provide shade, with a portable fan? the main thing is to keep it out of direct sun to let it do its thing. There are similar products for people around their neck.. coolers...plus proper clothing gear ie used in the desert areas..are my suggestions to be prepared...
