Here are some tips on what to do if you suspect or witness animal cruelty in your community. Feel free to add your suggestions, too!

* Learn who is in charge. Who investigates and prosecutes crimes against animals in your community? It could be animal control, a sheriff’s department or another entity entirely.

* Be specific and succinct. When reporting an incident, leave emotions out. Focus on dates, times, who was present, the animal’s species, age, breed and condition, exactly where
the incident occurred and other specific facts. If you can take photographs safely from a public place, include them with dates, times and details.

* Be patient but persistent. Sometimes, cases are being investigated, but their status cannot be disclosed. Politely remind the agency that you’re concerned and keep them informed about any new facts.
