Hi Herd Hosts -

I often encounter stray animals while on vacation. I'd like to be able to reunite them with their owners or a decent shelter, but this information isn't readily available in most vacation guides. What can I do? I can take care of them while I'm there, but having to leave them behind when I leave is heartbreaking.

Dear Chris -

Wow, this is a really great question. And knowing all the other CAPs (caring animal people) who visit our Web site, a lot of people have probably wondered the very same thing.

Here's what I would suggest. Before you go on vacation, do an Internet search for the municipal shelters and humane societies in the area you are visiting. Write down their location and contact information, so you've got it handy if you come across an animal in need.

You can find this information at the following Web site just by putting in the Zip code:
http://pet911.org/

Also, this toll-free hotline provides contact information for nearby shelters:
1-888-PETS911

Make sure you have this number handy whenever you travel, and you'll always be prepared to help bring animals out of crisis and into care!

Hugs and kisses,

Your friends from The Herd
